If you’re looking for a new everyday carry bag, you might consider a crossbody bag over a shoulder bag. But what exactly are the differences between these two types of bags? And why are crossbody bags a better fit for some people?
The Crossbody Bag
A crossbody bag is a type of bag designed to be worn across the body, and is commonly contrasted with shoulder bags, which are designed to be worn over one shoulder and under that same arm. As you might imagine, there are countless different types of crossbody bags available. They come in a variety of different materials, styles, shapes, sizes, and fits, and can conceivably go with almost any outfit as long as you choose the right individual accessory.
The hallmark distinguishing features of a crossbody bag are:
- Positioning. Crossbody bags are designed to be worn across the body, with the strap looped over one shoulder and the bag itself pinned near the side or hip of the opposite side of your body. This is a natural and comfortable position for most people, assuming your bag isn’t too heavy.
- Strap. Crossbody bags are also distinguished by having a much longer strap, accommodating the diagonal positioning. Many crossbody bags also have alternate, shorter straps so you can wear them or carry them in different ways. However, this isn’t a guarantee.
- Size. Generally, crossbody bags are bigger than shoulder bags. That’s because they aren’t designed to be pinned under the arm.
Advantages of the Crossbody Bag
Some of the greatest advantages of carrying a crossbody bag over a shoulder bag are:
- Better weight distribution. Arguably, crossbody bags offer superior weight distribution. Instead of putting all the weight of your bag over one shoulder, you’ll be distributing the weight across the strap and across your body. The bag is going to rest on the opposite side of your body, ultimately making the weight better distributed. That said, crossbody bags are still much less symmetrical than options like traditional backpacks.
- Tighter security. Pickpocketing and theft aren’t huge issues in most areas of the United States, but in some hotspots, they’re major concerns. Some people favor crossbody bags because they’re much harder to steal. If a thief wants to snatch a shoulder bag off you, all they have to do is jerk it away. Snatching a crossbody bag off someone is a much harder feat to accomplish, especially if that person is a moving target keeping their hand on the bag or strap. At the very least, you’ll make yourself a less attractive target to pickpockets and thieves.
- More storage space. Some people appreciate crossbody bags because of the extra space they allow. If you have many items to carry, or if you just like having more storage space to stay organized, this is an irreplaceable advantage.
- Versatility and options. It’s hard to directly compare crossbody bags and shoulder bags in terms of versatility because there are so many options of both varieties available. However, it’s worth noting that crossbody bags come in many different styles, colors, and forms, making them an adequate fit for a great number of formality levels, occasions, and outfit styles. In fact, many women have multiple crossbody bags for different kinds of occasions.
- A unique look. Generally, crossbody bags are less popular than traditional shoulder bags. This makes them an excellent opportunity to pull off a totally unique look.
Disadvantages of the Crossbody Bag
Crossbody bags do come with some disadvantages, however, meaning they aren’t a great fit for all people or all circumstances:
- A bigger profile (and more weight). Not everyone likes the bigger profile and size of crossbody bags; in some cases, it can look garish. And if you fill these bags to their maximum capacity, they get very heavy. If you carry around too much weight too frequently, it’s going to result in long-term health complications, no matter how the weight is distributed.
- Asymmetrical weight distribution. Despite the fact that crossbody bags are in some ways superior to shoulder bags in terms of weight distribution, they’re still asymmetrical. This can result in shoulder or neck pain over time.
- Limited options. Because of the unique nature of crossbody bags, you may be limited in terms of size and strap options available to you. You may not be able to find a perfect fit for your favorite outfit.
Shopping for the Right Crossbody Bag
If you’re sold on the advantages of crossbody bags, consider setting a budget and starting your shopping journey. You’ll be pleased to know that there are many different style options available from dozens, if not hundreds of different worthy online sellers. Just make sure you evaluate your prospective purchases in terms of not just look and price but also quality and craftsmanship.
