Function of Beauty first made waves when the company launched its bespoke haircare products, which let you customize a shampoo and conditioner duo to meet your own super-specific hair care needs. Now, Function of Beauty is taking that formula and bringing it to skincare.
When I saw their new skincare product line popping up all over social media, I was intrigued, but after a few of my skincare connoisseur friends started recommending it, I knew I just had to try it. I’ve actually been a longtime user of Function of Beauty’s shampoos and conditioners, so I was already familiar with the customization system.
It’s all pretty simple. You just have to visit Function of Beauty’s website and take their online skin quiz to figure out your needs and preferences. For me, the quiz was really quick. The first question asks you about your skin type (dry, balanced, oily, or combination). Then, you specify the amount of makeup you use every day (none, a little, a decent amount, or full coverage) and how often you get sensitive skin (never, rarely, sometimes, all the time).
I answered that I’ve always had pretty dry skin, never wear makeup, and get sensitive skin every now and again—then I filled out the next section. This is the fun part; you get to fill out your skin goals. Here’s a rundown of all the options as of writing this review: hydrate, rejuvenate, brighten, awaken, calm, minimize redness, minimize pores, tighten, reduce shine, anti-pollution, event tone, reduce breakouts, and smooth.
To meet my skin needs, I choose hydrate, smooth, and minimize pores. I even got to add my nickname to the bottle, which I always put on my hair care products too! And that’s pretty much it. After that, you determine whether you want your bottles to be fragrance-free or scented, and Function of Beauty designs your skincare products and routine for you. The shipping is super simple, and it all comes in a beautiful, eco-friendly box. I have the cleanser, moisturizer, and serum at home, and I can’t get enough of them.
Before we dive into what each product is like, I want to mention that one of my favorite things about Function of Beauty is that they only use clean, chemical-free ingredients. Just like with their hair care products, the new skincare line includes natural ingredients like sugar beet extract, vegan squalane, and sunflower seed oil. All products are also free of sulfates and parabens, and the research and development process is completely cruelty-free. That’s more than I can say about the specialty skincare products I was using before this, and I really appreciate the brand’s positive direction.
Alright, let’s take a closer look at the Function of Beauty cleanser. You have two options: the jelly cleanser or the micellar gel cleanser. For my skin, the micellar gel cleanser is ideal. This is a completely fragrance-free cleanser, and my favorite thing about it is that it isn’t stripping—it’s smooth and mild, which is perfect for rinsing off a night of sleep or cleaning up before bedtime. As I said before, my skin gets really dry really fast, so I love a subtle cleanser. The micellar option really hit the spot. Even with my complicated skin, it did everything I needed it to.
The next step is to use the serum. This is my favorite product. Not only does it feel great, but it’s super easy to use—once you open the lid, you just press a button, and there’s a little pipette waiting for you already filled with the product. According to the Function of Beauty website, the serum uses betaine, panthenol, and allantoin. My custom serum was perfect for my skin needs, and after just a few days of use, I noticed that my skin was super vibrant.
Finally, we have our moisturizer, which is used to lock in the serum and hydrate your skin. While I’m not a fan of scented products, I decided to try Function of Beauty’s “dew you” fragrance since it doesn’t use any artificial scents. It’s a citrusy and cucumbery smell that I ended up loving. This moisturizer is really the perfect bookend for my beauty routine. Better yet, it’s super smooth and never makes my skin feel oily or greasy. Even with my naturally dry skin, the moisturizer leaves my face feeling refreshed.
All in all, this is another home run for Function of Beauty. I love (and still use) their custom hair care duo, and now I’m thrilled to add their custom skincare products to my shelf. Compared to the specialty products I once used, I’m saving money and using a product that was tailored for my skin’s unique needs. What’s not to love?
