Beverly Hills Magazine: Paula, it’s such an honor to be here with you.
Paula Rose Castronova: Thank you so much for having me.
Beverly Hills Magazine: It’s our pleasure. Please share a little bit about your background and the journey that led you to your career in sustainability.
Paula Rose Castronova: I was born in Los Angeles, but my family moved to Sydney, Australia, during my teens. As an adult, I have lived in various places, including Los Angeles, New Zealand, Tokyo, London, New York, and Atlanta. My experiences across different cultures have given me a unique perspective on sustainable leadership, business, tourism, and culinary arts. Through my research and work, I believe we can honor cultural origins while fostering a healthier planet. I travel extensively to find the best solutions and lay the foundations for a sustainable and collaborative future.
Beverly Hills Magazine: What keeps you motivated when addressing the challenges of climate change and sustainability?
Paula Rose Castronova: I am inspired by the understanding that while we all have different perspectives, our DNA and humanity are intrinsically connected. I envision a future where we live in harmony with nature rather than apart from it. My motivation is to transform society’s values, moving away from an extractive mindset toward one that fosters regeneration, cooperation, and long-term prosperity. I firmly believe that by cultivating inner wellness, we can create external change that benefits people and the planet.
Beverly Hills Magazine: That is a powerful perspective. Can you explain the role of a Sustainability Growth Director and how it ties into broader environmental goals?
Paula Rose Castronova: A Sustainability Growth Director must understand the interconnectedness of economic, social, and environmental considerations. My role involves identifying opportunities for sustainable innovation, building partnerships, and inspiring stakeholders to embrace a shared vision for sustainability. I strive to bridge diverse groups and organizations, fostering collaboration and inclusivity. With my background in media and content creation, I communicate the importance of sustainability in a way that inspires action, ultimately creating a more resilient and equitable world.
Beverly Hills Magazine: Sustainability has become a key focus in business today. How do you work with organizations to implement sustainable practices?
Paula Rose Castronova: My studies at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainable Leadership and Harvard Business School have shaped my understanding of sustainability in business. During COVID, I was working in hospitality and wine industries, studying sustainable development in rural communities. This led me to start my own business as a Sustainable Growth Director. Sustainability ties into human rights, equitable business practices, and corporate responsibility. Governments, private sectors, and civil society must work together to integrate sustainability into business models and everyday life.
Beverly Hills Magazine: What are some challenges you face in this role, and how do you overcome them?
Paula Rose Castronova: One of the biggest challenges is measuring and reporting sustainability performance. Developing effective metrics to demonstrate progress and build stakeholder trust is complex. Many companies struggle with funding and dedicated sustainability teams. Resistance to changing long-standing habits and investing in new technologies is another common obstacle. However, the role is incredibly rewarding, and despite these challenges, we must continue driving transformation for the benefit of people and the planet.
Beverly Hills Magazine: Can you explain holistic sustainability and why it is essential in addressing climate change?
Paula Rose Castronova: Holistic sustainability is an integrative approach that balances present and future needs while recognizing the interconnectedness of Earth’s systems. Climate change results from imbalances in these systems. Holistic sustainability is similar to holistic medicine—it considers environmental, social, and economic factors. The Sustainable Development Goals have guided my work, and as a Sustainability Director for the United Nations Association of Australia, I am committed to supporting global sustainability initiatives.
Beverly Hills Magazine: How do you incorporate the three pillars of sustainability—environmental, social, and economic—into your strategies?
Paula Rose Castronova: Integrated policymaking is key. We must advocate for policies that address environmental, social, and economic concerns across industries. Businesses should adopt eco-friendly practices and corporate social responsibility initiatives. Community engagement and education are crucial for raising awareness and empowering individuals and organizations to make sustainable choices. I am writing a book and developing a course to make these principles more accessible, breaking down academic insights into practical strategies.
Beverly Hills Magazine: That sounds fantastic! I encourage you to complete your book soon because people are seeking actionable sustainability strategies. The Earth needs change now.
Paula Rose Castronova: Absolutely! Investing in community involvement, leveraging technology, and pushing for advocacy will help build a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future. These efforts will empower both current and future generations, fostering a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the planet.
