Karissa Ella: Thank you so much for having me. It’s an honor to be here!
Beverly Hills Magazine: It’s such a pleasure to meet you! Let’s start from the beginning—how did you get started in country music? Tell us a little about your background.
Karissa Ella: I was born and raised in North Canton, Ohio, about eight hours from Nashville, and I grew up surrounded by country music. My parents, though not musical themselves, instilled in me a deep appreciation for music. I fell in love with Broadway first but soon resonated more with country music. Belmont University in Nashville helped me get my foot in the door, but coming from a small town, I never imagined my dreams could become a reality. Now, having had the opportunity to open for Martina McBride this year, I feel incredibly blessed to be living my dream.
Beverly Hills Magazine: That’s amazing! It just proves that dreams really do come true when you work hard and believe in yourself. Who were your biggest musical influences growing up?
Karissa Ella: Oh, definitely Shania Twain—how could she not be? From her style to her attitude and music, she’s just iconic. I also love Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, and Gretchen Wilson—her spunk and energy really inspired me. And of course, Dolly Parton. Not only is she a legend in music, but she is also an incredible philanthropist. Her work to make the world a better place is truly inspiring.
Beverly Hills Magazine: Such great influences! Do you remember the first time you performed in front of an audience? What was that experience like?
Karissa Ella: Oh, absolutely! I started taking singing lessons in fifth grade, but I had terrible stage fright. I loved to sing, but performing in front of people terrified me. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I sang in front of my choir. I did a stripped-down version of Lady Gaga’s Edge of Glory, and while people loved it, I was so nervous I couldn’t move on stage! Now, I’ve learned to embrace those butterflies, and performing has become one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
Beverly Hills Magazine: That’s so encouraging for people who may struggle with stage fright. Now, your music has a fresh yet nostalgic country sound. How would you describe your style?
Karissa Ella: I love that description! That’s exactly what I’m going for—something modern with a nostalgic feel. I always say I have a little bit of Miranda Lambert’s fierceness, Dolly Parton’s sweetness, and a blend of classic and contemporary country. I enjoy singing strong ballads, emotional songs, and fun drinking songs. It’s all about capturing the full range of emotions in my music.
Beverly Hills Magazine: Absolutely, music is such a powerful medium. How do you hope your songs impact your listeners?
Karissa Ella: Music is a crutch for me in my daily life, and I know others use it the same way. I want my songs to be there for people, whether they’re crying, laughing, celebrating, or healing. At my shows, I always say, “Leave your worries at the door; you won’t need them here.” My goal is to create a safe space where listeners feel understood and know they’re not alone.
Beverly Hills Magazine: That’s beautiful. Do you have a favorite song you’ve written, and if so, why is it special to you?
Karissa Ella: Yes! I Hope Heaven’s Like This is incredibly special to me. Every lyric is true to my life. The idea came to me while I was driving around my hometown, watching the sunset and feeling completely at peace. It was such a rare, still moment, and I remember thinking, “I don’t know what heaven is like, but I hope it’s like this.” That feeling inspired the song, and it takes me back to that perfect moment every time I sing it.
Beverly Hills Magazine: That’s so powerful. Can you walk us through your creative songwriting process? Where do you draw inspiration from?
Karissa Ella: Inspiration comes from everywhere—personal experiences, journaling, and even stories from my friends. I actually love writing about other people’s experiences. It challenges me to step into their perspective and tell a story that resonates universally. Heartbreak songs, in particular, often come from observing others, as I’ve been in a happy relationship for a while now. But whether it’s love, loss, or celebration, I try to write songs that everyone can connect with.
