Hollywood Spotlight: Actor Timothee Chalamet
In the last year, Chalamet starred as Nic Sheff in Beautiful Boy, portrayed Henry V of England in the historical drama The King, and embodied Laurie in Greta Gerwig’s take on Little Women. He also donated his entire salary from A Rainy Day in New York to Time’s Up in the wake of the Me Too movement.
Personal Life
Timothee grew up in Manhattan and started acting as a kid in commercials and in the New York theater scene. He graduated from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art, where he was also a classmate of actor Ansel Elgort, and later attended Columbia University. He made his film debut in 2014 in Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children and appeared in Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar the same year. In 2017, he got his breakout role as a lovestruck teenager in Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name, which earned him several award nominations and won him the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, and Independent Spirit Award for breakthrough actor. He also had supporting roles in Greta Gerwig’s films Lady Bird and Little Women.
In 2018, he began starring in bigger movies, playing drug addict Nic Sheff in Beautiful Boy and a young cannibal in Guadagnino’s Bones and All. Next, he’ll appear as Henry V of England from 1413 to 1422 in the drama The King.
Acting Career
Few young actors are enjoying as much success as Timothee Chalamet, a rising star who has earned both critical praise and Oscar nominations. Chalamet grew up in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, the son of Nicole Flender, a real estate broker and former Broadway dancer, and Marc Chalamet, an editor for UNICEF. He began his acting career with small roles in commercials and in the New York theatre scene, eventually landing recurring guest spots on television shows like Law & Order and Royal Pains. He made his feature film debut in 2012’s Men, Women & Children and appeared in Christopher Nolan’s science fiction epic Interstellar, but it wasn’t until his role as a lovestruck teenager in Luca Guadagnino’s coming-of-age drama Call Me by Your Name that the actor really took off.
His performance in the film was so strong that it garnered a Golden Globe nomination and an Academy Award nod, and he soon found himself in high demand for leading roles. He worked with director Greta Gerwig on her films Lady Bird and Little Women, and also starred in a handful of other major movies, including Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune.
He also stepped into the mainstream with a teensy supporting role in Hostiles, a gritty Christian Bale-starring western. It may have been a bit of a misfire, but Chalamet used his time in the spotlight to prove that he’s capable of playing any character onscreen.
Philanthropic Efforts
As an actor who has received a slew of awards, Chalamet is well-versed in the benefits of charitable donations. He has a long list of causes that he supports. He has worked with designers like Haider Ackermann, who collaborated on a hoodie benefiting Afghanistan Libre. He has also teamed up with the New York Restoration Project and Habitat for Humanity, as well as a host of others.
Current Projects
After a brief stint on the television series Law & Order and Royal Pains, Chalamet broke through in the big screen with a role in Chad Kultgan’s 2011 film Men, Women & Children. He then gained notice for his lead performance in Luca Guadagnino’s coming-of-age drama Call Me By Your Name (2017), which garnered him critical praise and several award nominations. Timothee Chalamet continued to impress on the silver screen in 2018, starring as a drug addict in Beautiful Boy and as an arrogant teenager in Lady Bird.
He also starred in the London stage adaptation of John Patrick Shanley’s autobiographical play Prodigal Son, which won him a Lucille Lortel Award and Drama League nomination. Chalamet’s latest film is Wonka, in which he plays a younger version of Roald Dahl’s iconic character. The movie, which is a departure from Johnny Depp and Gene Wilder’s versions of the famous role, was released in December 2023.
Timothee Chalamet will return to the big screen in 2024 with a role in Dune, a sequel to the science fiction film from director George Miller. He will also portray Bob Dylan in the upcoming biopic Going Electric, which is expected to be released later this year. Other projects in the works for the talented young actor include an untitled Wes Anderson film and a remake of the horror classic It’s Alive.
