Early Life
Hudson was born in Los Angeles, California, on April 19, 1979. She is the daughter of Academy Award-winning actress Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson, a musician. Her parents divorced when she was 18 months old. She and her older brother, actor Oliver Hudson, were raised by her mother and her mother’s longtime boyfriend, actor Kurt Russell.
In 1997, she graduated from Crossroads, a college preparatory school in Santa Monica, and was accepted to New York University. However, she chose to pursue an acting career instead of an undergraduate degree.
Movie Career
Hudson began her acting career in the late 1990s with small roles in films such as “Desert Blue” and “200 Cigarettes.” In 2000, she received critical acclaim for her role as Penny Lane in the Cameron Crowe-directed film “Almost Famous.” The role earned her a Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actress. Kate also starred in several romantic comedies, including “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “Raising Helen,” and “You, Me and Dupree.” In 2006, she starred opposite Matthew McConaughey in the action-comedy “Fool’s Gold.”
In addition to her acting career, Hudson has also ventured into fashion and beauty. She co-founded the fitness apparel brand Fabletics in 2013. In 2016, she launched her cosmetics line, kate, by Kate Hudson.
In 2018, she starred in the musical comedy “Kounterfeit,” and in 2019, she starred in the comedy-drama “Marshall.” She also appeared in the film “Music,” released in 2021. Hudson has also gained recognition on TV shows as she starred in the HBO series “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” in 2021.
Awards
Hudson has received various awards and nominations throughout her career. In 2000, her role as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s drama film Almost Famous earned her nominations for an Academy Award (Oscar), a Golden Globe Award, a Satellite Award, a Critics’ Choice Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress and a BAFTA Award for Best Actress. She ended up winning the Golden Globe and Satellite Award. In 2012, her role in the film received recognition as the second-best performance by an actress in a supporting role of the 2000s decade by the Awards Circuit Community.
