Beverly Hills Magazine: Can you share where you grew up and what inspired you to pursue dentistry?
Dr. Tyler Hales: Absolutely. I grew up in Orange County, California, in the city of Tustin. I had a wonderful childhood with two sisters and a brother. My dad, an anesthesiologist, and my grandfather, who was also in the medical field, greatly influenced my career path. Watching my dad’s success and his ability to help people deeply inspired me. Initially, I intended to follow in their footsteps in medicine. However, during college, while preparing for medical school, I realized I needed to explore what truly suited my personality and career goals. Through research and shadowing, I discovered my passion for dentistry. I loved the hands-on aspect and the opportunity to be creative while improving people’s lives. That’s when I made the decision to pursue dentistry instead of medicine.
Beverly Hills Magazine: That’s a fascinating journey. When did you start your first practice?
Dr. Tyler Hales: In 2019, I worked as an associate in a high-end cosmetic practice in Colorado Springs. It was a great learning experience, providing me with valuable mentorship in cosmetic dentistry. Eventually, I partnered with Dr. Lincoln Parker at his practice in Ladera Ranch, California. He started his practice from scratch, building it one patient at a time. His entrepreneurial approach and dedication to doing dentistry differently inspired me, and it was the foundation for the kind of practice I wanted to create.
Beverly Hills Magazine: It sounds like you’ve had quite the journey. What has been the most challenging aspect of being an entrepreneur in the dentistry field?
Dr. Tyler Hales: The entrepreneurial side of dentistry was initially outside my comfort zone since I’m naturally more laid back and conservative. However, I’ve come to appreciate the challenges and rewards of being an entrepreneur. It’s about finding the balance between running a safe, consistent practice and pushing boundaries to make a meaningful impact. The hardest part is being vulnerable and working harder to achieve those impactful changes, but the fulfillment and the difference it makes in patients’ lives are incredibly rewarding.
Beverly Hills Magazine: How do you create a standout experience for your clients that keeps them coming back?
Dr. Tyler Hales: I focus on every aspect of the patient experience, drawing inspiration from everyday interactions, whether at a grocery store or a restaurant. I believe in making every patient feel listened to, empowered, and presented with options that lead to impactful results. We strive to provide a personal touch, ensuring that each visit is positive and memorable. It’s about transforming the often anxiety-inducing dental visit into an experience where patients feel valued and cared for.
Beverly Hills Magazine: That’s truly commendable. Can you tell us more about the “Smile Without Perfection” mindset and the three C’s—Core, Confidence, and Courage?
Dr. Tyler Hales: “Smile Without Perfection” is about embracing authenticity and intentional living. The three C’s guide this philosophy. Core represents our values and ethics, grounding us in what matters most. Confidence stems from growth and learning, leading to a strong sense of self-assurance. Courage follows, inspiring us to take action and make a positive difference each day. This mindset encourages not just aesthetic improvements, but also emotional and psychological growth for both our patients and ourselves.
Beverly Hills Magazine: Smiling is often seen as something we must perfect. How do you view the importance of a perfect smile in achieving happiness?
Dr. Tyler Hayes: Smiling is deeply tied to our self-perception. Many people think they need the perfect smile to be happy, believing it’s the key to their happiness or success. But that’s not true. While a confident smile can be one aspect of self-improvement, it doesn’t define your worth or happiness. Ultimately, it’s about who you are inside and how you show up for others. The cosmetic side of it provides an opportunity for people to feel better about themselves, which can inspire them to strive for more, but it’s not the sole path to happiness.
Beverly Hills Magazine: What is the greatest lesson you’ve learned on your success journey?
Dr. Tyler Hayes: The greatest lesson I’ve learned is the importance of living in the moment. In business, it’s easy to get caught up worrying about the future or regretting the past, but that creates anxiety and fear. By focusing on the present, we can make a more significant impact. Right now, the most important thing is this conversation, which brings value to my life and hopefully to others.
Beverly Hills Magazine: How do you balance your personal and professional life, especially considering the demands of your career?
Dr. Tyler Hayes: Balancing personal and professional life is crucial. Early in my career, I thought working harder than anyone else was the key to success. I woke up at 4:30 AM, worked out, and was at the office until 7 PM. But this led to physical exhaustion and a decline in health. I realized that dedicating time to my family and self-care was essential. Now, I work hard during office hours but ensure I spend quality time with my family. This balance helps me recharge and stay focused.
Beverly Hills Magazine: How do you take care of your spiritual self?
Dr. Tyler Hayes: I’m a very spiritual person, and my morning routine is vital to maintaining that balance. I start the day by writing in my journal, reflecting on the previous day, and noting what I’m thankful for. Then, I read the scriptures and pray, which allows me to seek guidance and connect with God. Sometimes I include meditation or breathwork to center myself. This routine sets the tone for my day, helping me stay grounded and spiritually aligned.
Beverly Hills Magazine: If you had one piece of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, what would it be?
Dr. Tyler Hayes: My advice would be to focus on the present and live in the moment. Don’t get lost in the details of the past or the future. Concentrate on what you can do now, and trust that it will build the foundation for your future success. Balancing hard work with personal care and spiritual growth is key to sustaining long-term success.
Beverly Hills Magazine: For an aspiring entrepreneur specifically in the dental field, what advice would you give?
Dr. Hales: For one, I would say, you know, find out what your passion is. There are so many aspects within dentistry you can explore. When you try to do everything, sometimes that’s just too much.
Beverly Hills Magazine: Right, so you think having a niche, whether it’s cosmetic dentistry, general, or children’s dentistry, is key to success?
Dr. Hales: Exactly, but it doesn’t have to be a specialty like treating kids or cosmetic patients exclusively. Your niche could be the way you treat patients. For example, if you love building relationships with patients, make that your niche. Your whole practice can revolve around fostering those relationships, whether it’s with kids, adults, or others.
Beverly Hills Magazine: I love that. It’s like the signature of your practice that makes you unique. How do you define success?
Dr. Hales: I used to think success was money. My goals were always money-driven, focusing on financial targets. But that never gave me fulfillment. Now, success is about the relationships I build with my patients and the trust they place in me. That’s what brings true fulfillment.
Beverly Hills Magazine: That’s a beautiful perspective. So many people make money their ultimate goal, but you’ve found fulfillment in serving others. As a Christian, you understand the importance of treating others with love and kindness.
Dr. Hales: Absolutely. The greatest commandment is to love God and love your neighbor. Our deeds of kindness and love are what truly matter.
Beverly Hills Magazine: If you had one prayer for God to answer today, what would it be?
Dr. Hales: My prayer would be for guidance to make the biggest impact in the world.
Beverly Hills Magazine: Amen to that. Now, you have a practice in Ladera Ranch and also see patients in Newport Beach?
Dr. Hales: Yes, I’m currently in Ladera Ranch, and I see consults in Newport Beach. I’m also building a new practice in Corona Del Mar focused on cosmetic dentistry, which should open in April next year.
Beverly Hills Magazine: Congratulations on the expansion! Where can readers find more information about your practice or make an appointment?
Dr. Hales: Our website is HalesAesthetic.com. I’m also on social media, especially Instagram, at @drtylerhales, where you can see our work and get to know more about me and our practice.
Beverly Hills Magazine: Thank you so much, Dr. Hales. It’s been an honor talking with you. God bless you, and I look forward to visiting your practice again.
Dr. Hales: Thank you, it was a pleasure. Have a blessed day!
