Riding a bicycle is a superior form of exercise for myriad reasons. For one thing, the rider controls the intensity of the ride, regulating tempo and distance to the appropriate fitness level. Cycling is also easier on the knees and feet than running or jogging. Additionally, cyclists cover more ground on a bike. Cycling is also a great eco-friendly option for your daily travel, reducing carbon footprints and traffic. These factors, among others, are why cycling is so popular in Oakland, the East Bay and, frankly, northern California. The questions are where and when to ride for the optimal two-wheel experience.

Of all the sectors in the San Francisco Bay area, the East Bay is a welcoming environment for cyclists, both hard-core and recreational. Oakland and Berkeley are the two predominant cities here yet this locale, encompassing massive acreage of parkland and undeveloped terrain, is attractive to trail riders and off-road adventurers. With such generous tracts of land over which to traverse, where are the places best suited for cycling? Moreover, which places are best for a family outing, and which serve better for a grueling, physical workout? In fact, the East Bay hosts the full spectrum of cycling difficulty.

Trails in the East Bay

  • The Iron Horse Regional Trail runs parallel to the Southern Pacific Railroad between Concord and Pleasonton, for 32 miles of riding enjoyment. On this path, cyclists will encounter parks and open spaces; business and commercial districts; as well as residential neighborhoods. The trail is considered excellent for families with young children, according to online reviews.
  • The Bay Area Ridge Trail is not a single trail but, instead, more of a web of trails arrayed around the ridge lines of the whole Bay Area. More primitive than the Iron Horse Trail, the Ridge Trail is a rustic tour of open spaces, wildlife preserves and public parks. In total, there are 410 miles of trail; in the East Bay, these trails run alongside the Diablo Range through Alameda, Contra Costa and Solano counties from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Marin Headlands. These trails attract serious bikers and hikers.
  • Summit Trail from South Gate is situated in Mount Diablo State Park. The consensus opinion is that this trail is for the ambitious and not conducive to relaxation. An 11.4-mile trek, the path takes cyclists deep into the belly of the park and then directs them out. Cyclists and hikers experience a 3,274-foot change in elevation when they complete this route.
  • The Contra Costa Canal Trail — is less grueling than the Summit Trail. The elevation delta is only 308 feet although the trail extends to 13.6 miles. This pathway is entirely paved and threads through Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, and Concord in a horseshoe pattern.

Additionally, mountain bike enthusiasts can find diverse terrains ranging from dirt and gravel to rocky surfaces at venues like Quarry Lakes, Diablo Foothills, Del Valle, and Crockett Hills.

While California boasts a number of cities with strong cycling cultures, afficionados will find what they are looking for in the East Bay area. When taking to the trails, bike lanes, and roadways. Always practice safe riding techniques, including wearing a helmet, signaling turns, and obeying traffic rules. Sadly, there were nearly 8,900 bicycle accidents in California in 2022. So exercise caution while you explore on two wheels.
