The bathroom is one of the most important areas of the home but it is also a space which can become drab, unhygienic and uncomfortable if it is not given enough care and attention. This is why renovating your own bathroom and doing your own plumbing is a smart way to revitalize the space and it could even have a positive impact on your entire life as it will give you a private, comfortable and welcoming space to get clean and ready for the day.  (Image Credit: leemelina08/Pixabay)

Why Do the Work Yourself?

You could, of course, use the services of a plumber but this can be expensive and plumbing on your own way is a great way to save money while also developing a handy new skill. It can also be highly rewarding to do your own plumbing and create a stylish and welcoming bathroom.

Tools & Equipment

Before getting started, you need to make sure that you have the right tools and equipment for the job. Places like RS Components have high-quality spanners and other tools which can be used for bathroom and plumbing jobs but you should also make sure that you have gloves, safety equipment, and a first-aid kit nearby. It is also helpful if you have someone assisting you while you carry out the work.

It’s not uncommon that homeowners cannot get the tools themselves due to affordability, and they often also don’t know how to use them properly. That’s why they like to see these plumbing services who already have the equipment and have great experience in getting the job done. Having someone with the expertise and gear ready to assist can make a huge difference.

Getting Started

The first step to plumbing your own bathroom is to establish where you want your fixtures to be positioned, including the shower, sink, toilet and bathtub. You will then need to measure the cut outpoints and drill points and carefully cut the openings in the floor. It is important to shut off the water at this point and to install the water lines – these are usually installed under the floor but can also run through the walls. Typically, there will be 5 lines installed which include cold for the toilet and cold and hot for the bathtub, sink and shower. You will also need flexible lines from the cold and hot water lines to the sink and bathtub.

Next Steps

Next, you will need to attach the drain lines for the sink, toilet and bathtub (these will all need to be different sizes). For the toilet drain, make sure that it is aiming downward toward the main drain line. You can then start installing the toilet, sink, tub and shower unit. There should be instructions for each unit but you just need to make sure that each unit is secured in the right position and connected to the water lines. You can then turn the water back on and test each item.

Decorating, Cleaning & Maintenance

It is then a case of decorating the bathroom to make it a stylish and welcoming space. You must also make sure that you regularly clean and maintain the bathroom in order to keep it working and looking its best. This will include de-clogging pipes when necessary, plunging the sink, using chemical drain cleaners and performing regular deep cleans of the entire bathroom.

Plumbing and renovating your own bathroom can save you a huge amount of money, plus it can also be rewarding to complete the work yourself and develop a new skill and this post should help you to do this.
