Deciding to go ahead with hair transplant surgery is a decision that many men and women are taking. Although it might sound quite traumatic, the procedure itself is generally painless and without complications. Hair transplant surgery is classified as low risk and not quite as invasive as you would think.
The actual process of a hair transplant
If you’re after a natural and fuller head of hair, follicular hair extraction techniques are the best. This is a very up-to-date technique which offers fantastic results plus a short recovery time. With no scarring, you can visit your hairdressers as soon as your new hair grows and not feel embarrassed.
The process of a hair transplant is fairly straightforward. Single follicles are removed carefully, with small incisions being made that are about a millimetre in width. A local anaesthetic is used to alleviate any discomfort. Using a punch device to remove the follicle is an efficient way to avoid any unnecessary scarring. The removed follicles are then put into the bald area of the head which in turn creates a natural look.
Follicles from one part of your head are transplanted to the area that has thinning hair or is bald. Any side effects or slight discomfort felt will disappear after a while as the graft establishes itself onto the head and heals.
After the transplant
Unless you know what to expect, recovery can be a little surprising.
Once the operation is over, you will see a new hairline straight away. New healthy follicles are now in position, although there may be scabbing present around them. Recovering from this part of the process, i.e. scabbing, is quick and soon all scabs should disappear.
Do expect a little swelling on the donor site of the head. This is usually temporary and will go away within a few days. If numbness occurs around the site of the donor follicles, it can last for a few months before everything is back to normal.
Soreness or some tenderness may also be felt after the grafting of hair follicles. Swelling of the forehead tends to fade within a day or two, so you can get on with your life and regular activities.
Recovery – short, medium and long term
If you find after your FUE surgery that newly transplanted hairs are falling out, don’t worry. It’s a normal part of the procedure and doesn’t mean the grafts haven’t taken. The new follicles will soon begin to grow at the graft site, around 1cm each month. It could take a little time for your new hair to become fully visible.
In the short to medium term, 4-5 months after the hair transplant, you should begin to get a good idea of your final appearance. In the long term at around 18 months, your new hair should have established itself and started to grow normally. By that time, no one will ever know you have had hair transplant surgery, and you’ll look and feel great.
