Second Chance, a nonprofit dedicated to creating opportunities for people to transform their own lives through programs that provide job readiness and life skills training, job placement, behavioral health and prisoner re-entry services, relapse prevention and sober-living housing for adults and youth in need, today announced it will host “Orange is the New Black: The Real Story with Piper Kerman.” Piper Kerman, author of the memoir Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, will be the keynote speaker at the highly anticipated event on Oct. 17, 2015, at Qualcomm Hall with all proceeds benefiting Second Chance.
“Orange is the New Black: The Real Story with Piper Kerman,” a benefit for Second Chance, is designed to help explain the failure of the current prison system and the solution provided by Second Chance to get people off the streets and into the workforce to become contributing members of society.
“Much like Second Chance clients, following her incarceration Kerman was able to re-enter the world she now succeeds in, which is why we are honored to have her present at our benefit this fall,” said Second Chance President & CEO Robert Coleman. “Second Chance empowers individuals to make sustainable personal changes that allow them to reenter the workforce and positively impact society. Our hope is that guests walk away from this event with a better understanding of the realities behind prison bars and what is being done on a daily basis at Second Chance to improve our community.”
Proceeds from this event will enable Second Chance to continue its ongoing work to support adults and youth in the community to leave their past mistakes behind and work toward a positive future and self-sufficiency. All money raised at the benefit will provide stable, year-round funding for job readiness training, development programs for disadvantaged youth, job placement services, sober living housing and behavioral health treatment.
In addition to Kerman’s presentation on Oct. 17, those in attendance will have the opportunity to enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, live music, an original one-act play based on inspiring true stories of Second Chance clients, and a presentation from Second Chance graduates highlighting how funds raised will help Second Chance’s mission to empower adults and youth in need.
For serious Orange is the New Black fans, among the four different ticket options available for purchase is a package that includes a meet and greet with Kerman. For more information on ticket options or to purchase tickets, please visit: www.secondchanceprogram.org.
