Beverly Hills Magazine: How did you two prepare to reveal so much about your private lives?

Kirk and Laura: We discussed it, and decided that if we’re going to do this, we have to give 100% to it. We thought about all the possibilities that could come from this opportunity, and decided it was a good idea. So we were completely willing to share our personal experience with the world.

Beverly Hills Magazine: How has being on the show changed your lives?

Kirk and Laura: It’s really brought us closer together. It challenged us to improve our communication, because we realized we really need to be on the same page about things. We learned how to talk through our differences and how to compromise. Marriage is no longer just about “You”…It’s all about “WE”.

Beverly Hills Magazine: What positive effects do you think will this experience have on your marriage?

Kirk and Laura: We think being on the show is a huge stepping stone that can help catapult us forward in many ways. It’s an awesome experience we’re enjoying together and embracing the opportunity to share it together.

Beverly Hills Magazine: What negative effects do you think this experience will have on your marriage?

Kirk and Laura: Filming can definitely be stressful at times, especially while we work through some of our personal obstacles and compromises that will ultimately make our marriage work.

Beverly Hills Magazine: How do you plan to protect your marriage as the show goes on?

Kirk and Laura: We plan to keep open lines of communication and to always know that everything is open to discussion. You also have to respect your partners’ feelings and validate them. We make it a priority to make time for ourselves and our relationship every day. With so much going on, we think that staying connected is going to be vital to the success of our marriage.

Beverly Hills Magazine: What have you learned about marriage along this journey?

Kirk and Laura: Marriage is truly a whole new experience. Once you get married, the dynamics change so much. It’s a huge step forward in commitment, and you realize that you have to keep your partners best interest in mind always, even when dealing with petty little issues. It’s about putting the other person before yourself.

Beverly Hills Magazine: What advice would you give to viewers who are considering getting married?

Kirk and Laura: We believe waiting to get married is a good idea. We were together for 4 years before deciding to get married. Most people fall in love with the idea of a person, the “representative” of who they are, but you really need to take the time to get to know the other person. You have to see them through the good and bad times in life. Before we got married, we shared our own personal struggles with each other and were successfully able to deal with them as life partners; it was this that solidified our bond. You also want to be able to sit in silence with your partner, yet still feel connected and comforted.

Tune in to BRAVO’s new hit series, “Newlyweds: The First Year” Season 2 premiering March 10th, 2015. Watch Kirk and Laura as they navigate the waters of love, showing us all how to make a marriage work.
