Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Architectural designer Kim Lewis, known for being the lead designer of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”, has a unique perspective on the top kitchen design trends for 2014. According to Lewis the top color trends for 2014 straddle both sides of the color spectrum: New neutrals and whites offer a harmonious backdrop, while more daring, exotic colors can be used sparingly or boldly to make a room pop. When it comes to combining color, finishes, textures and unique profiles, an up-market, unique kitchen hood can accentuate a kitchen in a dramatic, completely fresh way to make a design statement that is on-trend.

“While a high-performance kitchen hood is a must in today’s commercial style kitchens, a great hood can also be the centerpiece of personal style in a kitchen, and many can be truly customized in ways that other appliances like ranges or refrigerators simply cannot,” suggests Kim Lewis. Brands like Prizer Hoods encourage homeowners to define their own style by offering the ultimate in customization, she says. Offered in over 750 colors, 15 custom metals, 10 textures, 42 profiles, and unique trim options, the new Prizer Hoods product line is ideal for architects, designers and homeowners looking to bring cutting-edge ideas to the design palate to define one’s personal kitchen style.

Prizer Hoods“Prizer Hoods is the ultimate in customization as one can pair a select color and finish option with a unique shape or hood profile, and allows you to bring in many of the newest trends and accents into a kitchen in either a subtle or bold way,” says Lewis.

Color is often the first thing homeowners turn to when looking to spruce up a living area. This year, when it comes to the application of color, Lewis suggests taking an organic approach by looking to trends that are leading the 2014 color renaissance. For example, look to the creative use of Neutrals— this year, gray is the superstar of the neutrals family. Lewis calls gray the “softer side of black.” Not to be forgotten, black continues to speak to the high-end homeowner looking for the feel of an industrial-style design, which can be beautifully reflected in a strong, sturdy hood accented by today’s trending metals such as copper trims or polished brass strapping.

Muted Tones—the “soft as a feather” look lends itself to the color used sparingly theme. This palette includes white on white, tone on tone and light, airy looks. “In this color combination, we see the backdrop as white or soft in tone, while a hierarchy or focal color becomes center stage. This is the perfect palette to pop one color in for a dramatic visual.” A white kitchen represents a fresh start and simplicity as homeowner’s eyes are tired from all the busy color mixes of the past. Lewis explains, “This year, design is being translated into a more simplified life via white. Starting with white as a backdrop alloys for a stunning design when paired with solid surface countertops and colored appliances used as accents. ”

Perhaps Lewis’ favorite trend can be summed up as “Vagabond Style”. Rich in color and heritage, this combination is inspired by lands far away and is perfect for the homeowner that appreciates color and the story it evokes. Deep Moroccan jewel tones like spicy hot pinks and rich emerald greens are popular for those who love to accentuate a neutral kitchen with pops of color. Lewis says, “Color is joy. These deep, rich colors show an awareness and appreciation of other cultures.”

Extreme Makeover: Home EditionThis season we are seeing designs inspired by a more molecular viewpoint. Up close and personal, colors and textures found in nature are inspiring patterns and trends in design this year Another uber popular color choice to incorporate into a kitchen is Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year, Radiant Orchid. This bold color – as well as 750 others – can be showcased in a Prizer Hood.
